McCrea Adams: Music/lyrics
WHAT WERE WE THINKING?
(McCrea Adams)
We were all laughing as we drove out of town
Donnie's car was always full
He spun the wheel like it wasn't even real
all the way around in one pull
I looked back in the mirror
watched the lights disappear
Wondered where we were gonna land
Jeanie said, "Hey, come over closer,"
and she reached for my hand
she took my hand
We all shared those dusty summer dreams
when the nights were young
It's funny now how it always seemed like
we were the only ones
What were we thinking out there in the sun
where did we place our trust
Do we really choose the road we run
or does the road choose us?
What were we thinking?
What were we dreaming of?
Riding out through those empty hills
Staring up at the stars shining so far above
and dreaming
We parked way up on Keyser's Ridge
we watched the slow trains roll
You could see the lights crossing over the bridge
out on Winchester Road
It was New Year's Eve . . . Fourth of July
with fireworks in the sky
Jeanie turned around, she wouldn't say a word,
but I could see that look in her eye
I was dreaming of flying
out over the cliffs and the narrows
Dreaming of flying, straight and high ...
like an arrow
